A. History & Background
High
demand for the crew in cruise ship companies aboard and lack of information
about the hospitality & cruise industry as well as the lack of specialized
cruise ship training centers in North Sumatra make the people are not aware
about the job opportunities in the
cruise ship. It is the background of establishment of the Hotel & Cruise ship Training Centre “Medan Hotel Institute” as the first cruise
ship training centre in Sumatra, especially in North Sumatra.
Indonesian
Crew’s dominate almost 50% of the existing number of crew on board. This is the
main attraction of the other cruise companies, so they are competing for yacht
& crew ship crew recruited from Asia, especially Indonesia and Philippine,
due to the cheapness of salary they spend with the Asian crew compare with
European or American crew, but they are getting a reliable crew Asia,
characterized by a friendly and easy smile, has become the main attraction for
the cruise ship company. Seeing that opportunity, so many school & training
center opened in Bali & some place in Java Island to build and deliver
students / reliable to be employed on a cruise.
Mean while, in the island of Sumatra,there is
no school or similar training centers established. Therefore to accommodate student
/ alumni from Sumatra to get the same opportunities with colleagues in Java, it
is appropriate that the city became the first in Sumatra. Then the meeting of 3
sons of the North Sumatra who work on cruise
ships Holland America Line (Hobben Sitanggang, Kenedy Sirait and Albertus
Simatupang). Cruise Ms.Veendam who happened to be docked at the Port of Jeneau Alaska , discussed the plan to establish a
training center for hotel and cruise ship in Medan , North Sumatra .
However, during the
implementation, only Mr. Albertus Simatupang who remains committed to the
outcome of the meeting at Jeneau. This is to establish a training center hotel
and cruise ships. So “Medan Hotel Institute” was found on 8th of
August, 2009 with an operating permit from the local department of labor in
Medan; with registration No. 506/8/2 / DSTKM / 2009, located on Pasar 3 St.
Krakatau No.28, which was then in the third batch moved to Pasar 3 St. Krakatau
No. 26 Medan, until now.
The first
batch opened with 1 (one) majors / department, namely the housekeeping
department for 1 year and start training on August 12, 2009 by the number of
students 17. A number of very good considering the short preparation and
facilities are very minimal at that time. It could be said Medan Hotel
Institute stands then only with the spirit the son of North Sumatra informed
properly about cruises and become the person skilled in the field of
hospitality and can work in International companies especially cruises.
Building facilities were not
standard (the rental housing made as a class) did not dampen the spirit of the
students of the first batch to appear to be a reliable personalized and ready
to use at International level. This is caused of the program is different with
majority Tourism Academy in Medan. MHI has practice and theory that is given is not less
quality compare with some Tourism Academy in Medan which has luxury building.
It is recognized by some alumni of Medan
Tourism Academy who are following the short program training cruises in Medan
Hotel Institute. They did not receive housekeeping matery that detail on their campus before, when they
studied for 3 years before joining in Medan Hotel Institute.
Recorded until
the 3rd batch (period 2011-1012) Medan Hotel Institute still has one
(1) major department, namely housekeeping and has produced 32 graduates who
have worked on cruise ships as many as 15 alumni and others working in
International Hotels in various cities in Indonesia.
Along with the success of alumni
1st & 2nd batch of Medan Hotel Institute worked on
cruise ships as well as the high demand for crew ship crew in the food
production (kitchen department), then in the 4th batch (period
2012-2013) Medan Hotel Institute opened a new program that is Food Production Department,most of
student at that time alumni from Senior high school(SMA) / Vocational high
school(SMK) who graduated in 2012, and is now Medan Hotel Institute has of students majoring in food production reached 25 students and as
many as 28 students majoring in housekeeping. So the total student of Medan
Hotel Institute, 4th batch 2012 as many as 53 students. And finally
in 2012 Medan Hotel Institute could occupy the new additional building, it has
3 floors. And it has boarding facilities, satellite kitchen, model rooms and
classrooms with air conditioned as well as equipment and material practices and
theory with International standard.
July
2013, Medan Hotel Institute open for 5th batch and open new
department, Food & Beverage Department, with 24 student registered as
F&B Service and 26 student Food Production and 68 student of Housekeeping
Operation with total all 118 students.

C. Program
Since July 2013, Medan Hotel Institute has 3
speciality program; Housekeeping Operation, Food Production and Food Beverages Service.
All the program
conducted for 14 months and
registered as 1 year program with the following;

Theory & Practical (Hotel skill &
knowledge) in Campuss (5
months)
·
Internship / Job Training in hotel industry (6 months)
·
Theory & Practical (Cruise ship skill &
knowledge) in Campuss (3 months)
Total 14
months
MHI has 2 kind of week, namely Practical Week & Theory Week.
Theory Week will
be held from Monday to Friday at 08.30 – 15.00
During this week, student study in class room.
Practical Week
will be held from Monday to Saturday at 08.30 – 20.00 (shift time)
In Practical week, student in charge in every practical
section we have and they working as like as an employee in real hotel and the
working time as well.
All student devide become 2 group each department. So they
will attend theory class first for one week and continue to practical week for
next one week, continuously repeatdly.
For 6 month all student must be attend Job Training Program
(Internship) in International Hotel in Medan, Batam and some place in Malaysia,
such as Kuala Lumpur & Langkawi (minimal 4 star for local hotel and 3 star
for overseas hotel).

After finish Job Training, they will be back to Campuss for
3 (three) months to continue cruise ship program and make some report for
General Exam before graduation.
So,actual months for the student graduate from Medan Hotel
Institute are 14 months.
After graduation MHI will offering the alumni to some
partners hotel who need an employees.
